Breathtaking Plitvice Lakes

If you are looking for beautiful natural wonders to tour, we’ve got a true gem for you: Plitvice Lakes in Croatia. Plitvice Lakes National Park, the oldest national park in southeastern Europe and largest in Croatia, is famous for its beautiful and unique formation of lakes. Plitvice Lakes are situated in central Croatia, not far from the capital Zagreb, making them very accessible.
Plitvice Lakes have formed as confluence of numerous small rivers, both surface and underground karst rivers in the mountainous karst. These rivers join in one water flow, which is slowed by natural dams or travertines made of moss, algae and bacteria. These dams are just like coral reefs and grow by 1 cm a year. Travertines separate the water flow into sixteen observable lakes. Water flows out of those lakes over travertines, forming some of the world’s most beautiful waterfalls that attract a million of visitors each year.
